Krebskrankes Mädchen lernt krebskranken Jungen kennen, beide lieben das gleiche Buch, besuchen den Autor, werden enttäuscht, finden zusammen und erleben unendlichen Schmerz.
Ich stehe ja eigentlich nicht auf Herzschmerz-Filme. Aber meine Tochter hatte das Buch „Das Schicksal ist ein mieser Verräter“ gelesen und wollte den Film unbedingt sehen. Und ich war sehr gespannt auf die hoch gelobte schauspielerische Leistung von Shailene Woodley. Also Taschentücher eingepackt und ab ins Kino:
Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) ist ein Teenager mit einer langen Krebsgeschichte. Nachdem sie als 13-jährige fast an einem Schilddrüsenkrebs gestorben wäre, kann sie sich dank eines neuen Medikaments und mit einem Beatmungsgerät am Leben halten. Ihr Leben ist geprägt von Behandlungsterminen und einer Selbsthilfegruppe für Krebskinder. Dort lernt sie den charismatischen Gus Waters (Ansel Elgort) kennen, der eines seiner Beine verloren hat und als weitgehend geheilt gilt. Dieser begleitet seinen Freund Isaac (Nat Wolff), der bald sein zweites Auge im Rahmen einer Krebsoperationen verlieren wird. Hazel und Gus freunden sich an und entwickeln einen gemeinsamen Sinn für sehr schwarzen Humor. Sie macht ihm mit einem Buch des Autors Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe) bekannt, das sie sehr beeindruckt hat. Ihr größter Wunsch besteht darin, den Autor kennenzulernen und mehr über die Geschichte nach dem Ende des Buches zu erfahren. Aber Van Houten hat auf keinen ihrer vielen Briefe reagiert. Gus macht diesen Wunsch mithilfe der „Make A Wish“-Stiftung möglich, gemeinsam mit Hazels Mutter (Laura Dern) reisen sie nach Amsterdam, verleben ein vom Autor bezahltes romantisches Dinner und treffen schließlich auf ihr Idol, das sich aber als alkoholabhängiges, grantelndes Arschloch erweist. Enttäuscht verlassen sie den Autor und machen mit dessen Assistentin einen Besuch im Anne-Frank-Haus, wo Hazel durch die vielen Treppen an die Grenzen ihrer körperlichen Leistungsfähigkeit gebracht wird. In diesem Moment der Schwäche wirft sie alle Bedenken gegen eine engere Beziehung zu Gus über den Haufen, beide küssen sich und kommen zusammen. Am nächsten Tag eröffnet Gus ihr, dass sein Krebs zurück ist und er nicht mehr lange zu leben hat. Die letzten Tage mit Gus sind ereignisreich und emotional, aber sein Kampf gegen den Krebs ist verloren. Bei seiner Beerdigung taucht Autor Van Houten auf. Hazel weist ihn ab und bemerkt nicht, dass er einen Brief im Auftrag von Gus überbringt. In diesem Brief macht ihr Gus noch einmal eine wundervolle Liebeserklärung.
Da wurde ganz schön geschnieft und geheult im Kino. Denn diese Geschichte geht selbst dem hartgesottensten Zuschauer mächtig ans Herz. Krebskranke Jugendliche, die Liebe des Lebens, Hoffnung, Verzweiflung, Tod, das sind die ganz großen Bestandteile des Dramas. Doch die schön erzählte Geschichte von John Green und die große Leistung der Schauspieler lassen den Film nur selten in den Kitsch abgleiten. In ein paar seltenen Momenten wird mithilfe der Filmmusik noch einmal dick aufgetragen. Während sich die Geschichte bis zum Höhepunkt in Amsterdam sehr stringent und flott entwickelt, wird der Plot ab dort etwas holperig. Aber das ist offenbar der Realität geschuldet, denn der Endprozess dieser fürchterlichen Krankheit ist nicht linear, sondern erfolgt in Schüben – so fühlt sich auch der Film an. Von den jungen Schauspielern Shailene Woodley und Ansel Elgort wird man sicherlich noch viel hören und sehen. Das ist ein Film für die ganze Familie, zumindest ab dem Teenager-Alter. Ein Film, der Emotionen weckt und über den man anschließend viel reden kann.
